What is a realistic three year plan?

Playoffs in three years seems realistic, using this year as step 1.

The bad news is we have serious holes at most offensive positions.

The good news is the every roster in the NFL has a 60-70% turnover rate over a 3 year stretch. We also have a chance to start the reset of the roster with salary cap and the draft.

My goal would be to start building anchors at key positions, QB, WR, OT and keep adding to that base. With some luck and good planning we start digging out of the hole.

How would you approach a three year rebuild?
How would I approach it, or how will they approach it? They're probably two different answers.

Depends on what they do in FA and the draft. If they land a good QB, then the playoffs should come sooner than later. They need to surround him with talent though.

It depends upon how they approach QB. If they get a guy like Tannehill they might make a WC spot next season, provided they improve at OT and WR. If they go for a guy like Brissett they won’t make the playoffs. If they take a top 3 QB and let them sit while they fix the rest of the offense I think playoffs year 2, serious contender year 3.

If they pass on QB in the top 3 then forget about being a playoff team for the foreseeable future. They will suck for years to come.

Think we can be competitive and potentially a fringe playoff team in a year or two. To start that path, this year's offseason would look something like the following.
  • Resigning; Onwenu, Bourne, Jennings, Henry, Alex Austin, Mack Wilson, Pharaoh Brown
  • Free Agents; Higgins or Pittman, Barkley or Ekeler
  • Draft: 1) Jayden Daniels, 2) LT- Jordan Morgan, Kingsley Sumataia, Patrick Paul. 3)WR Tez Walker, 4) Jaheim Bell TE
Figure out a way to get out of the following contracts; Parker, JuJu, Godchaux, JC Jackson

QB- Daniels, Vet

LT- One of the above rookies
LG- Strange, Jake Andrews, Mafi
C- Andrews
RG- Sow, Andrews
RT- Onwenu

WR- Higgins/Pittman, Tez Walker, Bourne, Pop Douglas
TE- Henry, Bell, Brown
RB- Stevenson and Ekeler

Like getting Daniels weapons that he can develop with. We'll need to continue to improve line depth, but that would be an exciting offense to watch.

Also wouldn't hate MHJ in the first and Joe Milton (Ten QB) in the 5th, with the above 2-4.

Defense we get Judon, Gonzalez, Marcus Jones back.. and should continue to be sound on that side.
So, if the bottom of the 1st LT isn't ready to start, we have will have a not ready rookie, a converted RG at RT and whoever as their backups.

This sound a lot like 2023. Even ONE injury to an OT will essentially doom us. I think that we had several last year.

The Patriots are playing a last place schedule.

It'd be pretty embarrassing if they can't make a push for the playoffs.

Let's see.
If they bring in Tannehill they might make a WC spot next season.

If they don't get one of the top 3 QB's and settle for Nix or someone else, they can forget the playoffs for the foreseeable future.
Tannehill and QB at 3 leads to a possible WC
Tannehill and a QB at 10 leads to no playoffs for the foreseeable future.

Got it!

2024 depends MOST on signing our free agents, signing a veteran starter and securing 2 starting OT's and a swing OT.

This is very doable if we spend the resources to focus on the veteran QB and the OT's.

I just dont see a last place schedule here.

The guy who got benched for 3 different guys over the last two years on a non-playoff team.

Mac Jones at QB the Pats will be in the playoffs in season two.

So what would you propose to fix the line? I don't care for any of the free agent options.

Huh? Three year plan? F that. I wanna be in New Orleans in 54 weeks!

Thoughts/Comments:

a.) With the defense only having a few free agents in Dugger, Mills, Bryant, Wilson, Jennings, and Uche...I think we will retain at least Mills, Bryant, Wilson and Jennings. So, we will likely lose a great safety in Dugger...and need to replace that...and also replace Uche's pressure opposite Judon. But I think this is a manageable talent exodus and we will fill out the holes here in free agency, late in the draft, and via the next man up

b.) Coaching staff on the defensive side of the ball will be consistent with Covington the DC and Mayo being the former "DC" in theory. And I think with Belichick sitting out for 2024, his sons will stick around.

c.) In short, the defense will remain the same barring injuries. And IMO, it is a top 10 defense still. We have enough to slow down the most potent offenses in the league on that side of the ball.

d.) Special teams will see Slater retire most likely...and we will have a new coach. Hopefully, that improves things...hard to predict how ST units will perform. Worried about Ryland's inconsistency....we are almost certainly bringing in a camp leg to make Ryland earn his job.

e.) Offensive line: We are set at LG and C with Strange and Andrews. The rest is all up in the air, but absolutely cannot be worse than it was early in the 2023 season. A lot will ride on the OC we hire and his/her philosophy...if we get someone from the McVay tree...we need zone blocking OL-men. And we will probably need to break the bank for Onwenu. He's worth every penny, IMO...all pro guard...but can play tackle at both spots. That is 3 spots man...

f.) Offensive skill players: We obviously need to fill the TE room, pick up at least one WR who can push Bourne (if we resign)/Douglas/JuJu/Parker down the depth chart to #2/#3/#4#5 WR's, and a QB in the draft.

g.) Even as bad as the offense was last year....we were still 4-8 in one score margin games last year...mostly because of our inability to score points. Add 2 good FG drives to each one of those games...and that would be a +4 win turnaround which would have gotten us to 8-9 on the year. And the games in Miami and vs. K.C. were not decided until the 4th quarter. In other words as bad as we played...we weren't that far from a playoff berth.... just look at the Bills game late in the year...we absolutely "threw" that game away with all of those turnovers and yet kept it close somehow.

h.) There is a fine line between winning and losing in the NFL. <--Bill Cowher And I agree....I seriously can see a scenario where we sign a WR1 in free agency, resign Onwenu, and add some more defensive players in FA (there are a lot). Then draft Jayden Daniels in round 1, take an OT in round 2, and then some more OT/TE/WR's in rounds 3-5.... and install a McVay offense to go with our steady defense and improved ST units..... that's 10 wins right there, IMO.

I'm going to get some hate for this, and Krafty isn't going to be happy, but I wouldn't aim to make the playoffs until the third season.

Yes, Yes, the NFL can turn around so quickly....don't care, embrace the suck and build the team right. If we just try to patch the holes we have now, by the time the O is competitive again the D will almost stripped bare....almost every player on the D hits FA in the next two years.

While this years draft should be primarily O, the FA period should be used on D on younger second contract guys that can make an impact for the foreseeable foreseeable.

The draft should aim to fill at least one hole with a near guaranteed stud, and that pick should be dependent on the OC, no QB at any costs at 3. If the right guy is there, is a fit for what the OC wants to run, go for it. Otherwise trade back a couple spots and pick a LT and a '24 2nd to start with. Use the high 2s (ours and the acquired pick) to take a swing at a QB that fell, sit him for a year while the OL gels; the other one whatever skill position fits in the new O. The rest of the draft, BPA, we need upgrades in a lot of places. You aren't going to fill every hole, but take care of some of the big ones, and build team talent.

'25 would depend alot on how the previous season went, probably another top 10 pick. But again aim first to improve the team talent overall, not patching smaller holes, both in the draft and in FA....no older players in FA, young guys. Fill in one glaring hole in the draft, then BPA....improve talent.

'26 If the previous two drafts have gone well, talent level the team should be improved overall, this is the year to try and get veterans in FA to fill in remaining holes. Hopefully all major holes are filled, and the draft an be more targets towards upgrading specific positions instead of BPA.

If you've screwed up the drafts this will likely be Mayo's last season, time to start over....

(This is kinda rambling, I was typing it while doing two other things)

Mac Jones at QB the Pats will be in the playoffs in season two.
I think this might be the quickest path to relevancy.

Resign onwenu, Henry , P brown
In FA overpay for Tee Higgins and T Smith
Draft MHJ in r1 and trade up to late 20s to get the best remaining OT as swing tackle.

Trade / cut Parker and JuJu.

And have a OC who will be here for at least 2 more years .

If Mac stinks draft a qb in 2025 or 2026. At least you will have a decent team to start off with in 2025.

If we sign daniels and he stinks we need to draft a wr1 and a qb1 again.

If pittman / higgins don't sign here we are In a pretty tough spot . Then we need to sign Bourne and hope teams double teaming MHJ will lead to bourne becoming a very good wr 2 / 1 .5

2024: lose more than 2023 due to head scratching game management issues
2025: lose slightly less than 2024 but defense starts to deteriorate
2026: lose a lot again, Mayo gets fired

I hope I’m wrong but we’re essentially the same team minus a great coach and maybe an owner that will meddle with Mayo less? It’s a bad sign that coordinators don’t want to come here. There’s a lot of work to do.
You must have a miserable life

since the last place schedule will contain Cincinnati probably with Joe Burrow bad break for us

if we hit on a QB we could make the playoffs next year. 9 wins is enough to get you in most years now. If we aren't competing for a playoff spot by year 2, Mayo's job will be under threat.

Currently in a Chicago style pizza spot in Nashville. Owners and family all from Chicago….this is on the wall. It could always be worse lol
