A former girlfriend is suing Dalvin Cook for assault. She didn’t file criminal charges. Cook’s attorney claims she’s the one who assaulted Cook and that this suit is “extortion.” This is very similar to the Antonio Brown suit, but in that case, the league immediately embarked on taking him down and treated it as a very serious, very legitimate accusation. Here, they’re trying to bury it and avoiding comment.
With Cook, they’ve worked with their sisters at ESPN to get in front of this one to clarify it is “an extortion attempt” because (a) it seeks monetary reward, and (b) the accused denies it. Here is the Tweet from NFL Shill Extraordinaire, Adam Schefter, running out in front of the story, wording this to mislead.
Here‘s what was leaked, apparently in response to Schefter’s tweet.
I’m in no way saying Cook is guilty. But I’m definitely saying the league and their little hatchet man are spinning this, and that reporting it as “extortion” first to set the tone, using an attorney’s words, is way out of line from journalism norm, and starkly different from how they’ve handled other allegations such as AB.
