Player Signing Josh Uche back on 1 year deal

he instead becomes the first Patriots early-round pick to sign a contract extension with the team since Duron Harmon, ending what had been a long drought.

Yikes!

Bentley, Wise, Mason, Cardona, James White… this simply isn’t true.

we're not locking anyone up long term. everything is going to cost more next year with the cap continuing to rise.
The cap won’t rise nearly as high next year, this massive rise was something that happens once a decade or so when they negotiate a new TV deal.

On average it only goes up 4-5% every year in between TV deals.

Why lock up Uche long term when he doesn't deserve it?

Takes two to do a deal.
Uche reminds me of Bruce Irvin formerly a 1st round pick from the Seahawks, then played as a hired gun for years afterwards as a pass rusher.

Only played in one direction, forward, made his money off sacks and tackles for a loss. That's Uche. I could see him going team to team later on as a pass rush specialist.

"Early" round draft pick.
Unless you consider 4th and 5th round picks to be early, it does sound true to me.

Duron Harmon: 3rd in 2013

Bentley was a 5th (2018)
Cardona was a 5th (2015)
Mason was a 4th (2015)
White was a 4th (2014)

I mean Thuney was a 3rd rounder, got franchise tagged… that’s a contract. They’ve had plenty of good players who left because they got massive deals like Thuney.

This quote sounds like somebody reaching to create a damning sound bite.

My only suggestion is to read the full article and take it up with the author.

That's the case with Uche and Dugger still is on a 1 year tag, but overall?

Onwenu/Henry/Jennings/Bourne/Gibson all got 3 year deals. Takitaki got a 2 year deal. Hooper/Okorafor/Brissett all got 1 year deals, but all are pretty widely considered stop gap/depth signings.

Any of those drafted in 1st 3 rounds?

And Jennings would be the 2nd?
And when Kyle Dugger re-signs, that will be the third.
Fourth if you consider playing under the franchise tag (Thuney).

2013 3.91: Duron Harmon - re-signed in '17 to 4-year deal

Those drafted in the first three rounds that did not make it to a second contract with Patriots, since 2013:

2018 2.56 Duke Dawson - traded to Broncos after 1 season

2017 3.83 Derek Rivers - traded to Rams after 3+ seasons
2017 3.85 Antonio Garcia - waived after 1 season

2015 2.64 Jordan Richards - traded to Falcons after 2 seasons
2015 3.97 Geneo Grissom - waiver (later re-signed) after 1 season

2014 1.29 Dominique Easley - waived after 2 seasons
2014 2.62 Jimmy Garoppolo - traded after 3+ seasons

2013 2.59 Aaron Dobson - waived after 3 seasons
2013 3.83 Logan Ryan - signed by Titans (3 yrs, $30m)

I assume it's a prove it type deal

I like it. We're not committing long term dollars but we're getting back a guy who played pretty well for us and already knows the defensive system. So far a lot of the moves under Wolfe just make sense. If Uche blows up and has a monster season then he can get a richer deal in free agency next year. BTW it was a 1 year deal worth 3 million. So very little risk to this signing.

Outside of a couple of exceptions most of those guys who didn't get a 2nd contract list are just hot garbage. Just shows you how awful our drafts were over the last decade! The grocery shopper got gone for good reasons! Now we have to rebuild.

Absolutely true.

Whether it was the brain drain of front office talent, or the game changing to make the evaluation process obsolete - the numbers are astounding. And keep in mind this is strictly draftees in the first three rounds; this isn't a list of 6th-7th rounders that didn't pan out.

The seven draft classes from 2013 to 2019 consisted of 22 players drafted in the 1st-2nd-3rd rounds.
Three left with decent paydays elsewhere as free agents.
One was retained for one additional year under the franchise tag.
Not a single one of the 21 others were signed to a contract extension by the Pats.

It's truly amazing that the downfall did not happen earlier. During that 2013-19 period the Pats still somehow won all seven divisional titles, made it to the AFCCG six consecutive times, and won three Super Bowls.

I heard this being discussed early this season, it was explained as first three rounds that did or didn’t sig a second contract with the team.

It's just a silly quote... Jamie Collins became the highest paid ILB in football, Chandler Jones got close to 100 million, Thuney got 90 million, JimmyG became the highest paid player in the entire NFL.... they had good players, they got priced out.

In the time since the Patriots drafted Duran Harmon they played in four Super Bowls and won three of them. Relevant?

It's a dumb meaningless factoid... it's Patriots rage bait.

Yup we had one X-factor who helped cover up the cracks in the wall - TB12. I know some fans hate him now because he left. But the way BB treated him, and was slowly destroying the offense around him, I can't blame him. And for TB12 to win a championship outside of Foxboro kinda says it all about who was the real driving force behind all those Patriots championships.
