The Patriots Need to start Hiring Coaches at this point...

This is crazy though I do see some flaws but I'm really liking Nix for us on a slight Trade down get an extra pick in the process.
We certainly could trade down one or two spots. Both teams want Harrison. I suspect that either or both would give us a pick,

Amen. I agree with the op. There has been plenty of time for due diligence. Would like Mayo to demonstrate capability for expeditious decision making. Not a good harbinger for free agency.
Plenty of decent candidates, stop wIting for manna from heaven and nake some offers
It takes two to tango. Let’s put it that way, on offense, I don’t think the waiting come from the Patriots side.

On defense, I agree that at this point, if Covington is the guy then he should already be signed. The rest of the position coach are tied to what Bill will do.

So apparently the OC job for the Patriots toxic - Patriots’ offensive-coordinator job is reportedly ‘not highly coveted’

I find it odd because there's potential for a highly touted QB/WR in the first round, tons of cash to spend to get more weapons/solidify the OL or get a vet QB.

The only thing that would hold candidates back is if the HC insist on installing a system they are not familiar with or if the Patriots organization is simply looked upon as a toxic place to work in.
This would make sense if Kraft is insisting that Mac is still the QB

Not according to what he said at the introductory press conference. All football decisions were made by Bill.
Within the constraints set by RK (I doubt if BB had a blank check)

I am sure Bill had a budget, but the buck stopped with Bill, 100%.

100% this. I think they had a system - or pay range, based on cap allocation percentages, for each position.

But everything else? Belichick handled. Probably right down to making sure the visiting team locker room was stocked with that scratchy, wal-martesque single ply toilet paper.

I doubt it’s Mayo dragging feet as much as none of the OC candidates thus far have actually WANTED the job.

Mighty have fallen…hopefully temporarily

I suggest a poll of NFL players to see how many think that Boston is a great place to raise your kids.
NFL players, in general, are not too bright and Boston and Massachusetts are trending down.....fast. It's like a virus that keeps spreading and spreading. No way I would raise my kids here if I had the money to live elsewhere. I'm only still here because of family. I am also a witness to the decline.

January 17 RKK announced Jerod Mayo as the 15th head coach in the history of the New England Patriots... And since then, we have had two coaches leave, and the rest are kinda in limbo... staying, going? who knows

Not only do we not know who is going to coach, but we don't know who will be running the ship on the personnel side of the ball... Matt Groh? Eliot Wolf? Someone new? We've heard nothing about this vital role yet... not even a peep on the rumor mill... Maybe this starts to shake itself out now that we know BB is not going to Atlanta, or, really, anywhere else... Groh committed to the Patriots? or has he been working with one foot out the door, waiting on the BB decsion? Is Wolf in the same boat? Its getting late in the hiring cycle... Its time we get some clarity on the direction this football team is going to take...

As for the coaches, over the past few days, I have posted that the Patriots OC position was a desirable job... The number 3 overall pick, the statements of Coach Mayo about "burning some cash" combined with the limited number of openings in the NFL for the OC position... Based on reports over the last few days, it appears that my assessment of the situation at hand is wr-wr-... hmm.. is incorrect. It appears that The lack of weapons on the roster & the promise of the a future QB at #3 is hampering the effort to replace BoB as the OC... It is unknown if Mayo has offered the job to any of the candidates he has interviewed, but so far, there has been zero movement on replacing the OC... This has got to change... as more and more head coaches are hired, many of the guys we think we should hire are getting snapped up by other franchises... Time for Mayo to make a decision.

As for the DC role, I think most of us know it looks like DeMarcus Covington will get the job... I'm fine with the move because i think consistency on the defensive side of the ball is important... the defense has been the mainstay of the team over the past few seasons... no reason why that shouldn't continue with Covington in place... I would like to hear that the position coaches on defense are returning, but i think its more inportant to solidify DC role first with an official hire... Why wait? That way the rest of the staff of the defensive side of the ball can be solidified...

The one coach i would like to keep here, tied to the defensive side of the ball, is Steve Belichick... He gets ragdolled a bunch because technically hes a first generation nepo coach... think its a bit unfair because at this point he has a dozen years in the NFL and has turned out to be a good coach... Promote him, give him the Assistant Head Coach title, then make him your senior defensive assistant to work with Covington... As Mayo pointed out in his presser, titles are important... Doing this really re-enforces the continuity on defense...

Lastly, the Pats need to be aggressive in Free Agency... they need to fill the holes in the roster, especially at the skill positions... The earlier the role of OC is filled, the sooner the work can begin in free agent player evals... The top two free agents out there by all accounts are Tee HIggins in Cincy & Michael Pittman in Indy... Either of these two would go a long way to help bring the quality of the offensive weapon skill set back up to par... I don't think either are enough to put them over the top but either will really help... We need to optimize the player selection process by actually hiring some coaches so we can being tampering early, and hopefully often...

Great post!! I feel the EXACT same way. I don't think you could be any more accurate. Like why the limbo? Why does it feel like so much uncertainty? I believe a large part is due to a new HC being hired so Bills staffers are all wondering whether to stay or go or if they'll be retained. However your right Mayo just needs to hire an OC.. at this point it's likely Caley or Josh is back. Seems the candidates keep getting jobs elsewhere. Defense your right we are set there. I don't have any concerns on the defensive staff.

I believe they will be aggressive, and will likely have to outbid other suitors for the talent we need at the skill positions.

I think our best bet is McDaniels, I'm not a fan, at numerous times I was pissed off with his play calling, but he is a good OC and knows this team. I would love for this team to try to install a different offense so hiring him would go against that so they would need to have a conversation "look man, times are different, please use your knowledge to design something new"

Maybe not having to report to BB would give him a little more freedom to be more than an OC, almost an offensive head coach, maybe that would entice him

I think things will start get moving after the conference title games during the lull between those games and the Superbowl.

Here's a directory of all thread about Mayo's coaching staff. The 2nd one is pinned.

I bet Seattle is waiting for Ben Johnson - that seems like the closest fit for him.

The fact that WAS hasn't promoted Bieniemy is odd, and doesn't bode well for him.
The only still-active options left for WAS would seem to be Todd Monken or maybe Aaron Glenn?
Otherwise, Vrabel and BB seem like good candidates.
MacDonald is projected to SEA.
Johnson to WAS.

There's a lot of Offensive coaches still out there.
Old Guys (ex-OC/HC) - Bevell, Reich, McCoy, Kliff, A. Smith, Van Pelt, JMD,
New Guys - Robinson, Griese, Caley, Tom Brown, J. Johnson, Kubiak,

It's really such a hit & miss.

I feel like you can eliminate some who could be head coaches elsewhere - Bevell, Reich, Kingsbury, Arthur Smith, etc. They're not going to bring those guys in with a first year head coach.

It takes time to weed out the rat that fed the Mayo hit piece to Bedard. They'll find him. I hope Mayo puts his bat to good use. Unless of course he already left the building.

Could really be anyone, who knows. Kraft himself talks to Steven A . All the time.

Amen, Preach it... Can't stand disloyalty... Like those who, i dunno, rooted for another team for a few years, then pop back up on the Pats bandwagon... those types definitely need to have a meet up with Mayo's bat, right?
