Counting comp picks, we already have 10 picks in 2011. How many roster spots can we realistically afford to upgrade every year?
The 2010 draft is scary deep. This is the year to move UP. Some second round picks carry first round grades.
Best value is to trade up for Suh! Burn the Raiders 2011 1st and our 2010 1st, but get Suh and then use the three second rounders, because if they came out next year, they probably would have been first rounders.
The key to our defense are the 3 studs on the D Line that help create a numbers mismatch in our favor.
If you really believe that a 2010 2nd round pick is equivalent to a 1st round pick and so on, then this is what we really have -
2010
Round 2.2 #34 (1st)
Round 2.15 #47 (1st)
Round 3.7 #71 (2nd)
Round 3.10 #74 (2nd)
Round 4 #116
Round 6 #180
Round 7 #213
So that is equivalent to two 1sts and two 2nds in 2010, then we'd have THREE 1sts and THREE 2nds in 2011. I don't see how you could go wrong with that.
And Spiller is a good back, but is he as good as Mark Ingram in 2011? Dez Bryant and Golden Tate are good WRs, but are they as good as Floyd and Green in 2011?
Trading picks back, sets the Pats up for a monster 2011 and a very solid 2010. Burning both 2011 first round picks to trade up for ONE guy, Suh, does not at all fit BB's value based philosophy and also gives us an EMPTY CUPBOARD for 2011, whereas we might have been looking at Ingram, Floyd, and another stud in 2011 instead if we can make these trade backs for more picks in the future.
Who wouldnt do those trades? They are a bit one sided. I think if trades like that ever happened, the NFL would bring down an immediate investigation.
I've never seen the NFL investigate the trading of picks have you? Heck, I've never seen them investigate a tampering claim for that matter. It would have to involve something a lot juicier like... filming video from the sidelines.
These hypothetical trades are if maximum value could be extracted. Actual value in today's draft might be slightly less. However who would not be excited about having 3 1st round picks in the 2011 draft, and 2 of those picks likely top 10 choices? NFL teams are so pressured to win now, that they value draft choices that can help them THIS year a lot more than future picks. And BB has taken advantage of that mentality to put the Pats in the best draft position possible. So far that has gained us guys like Wilfork and Mayo and the Raiders 1st in 2011. There's nothing to make me believe that trend won't continue when coaches and even GMs are fired at the end of the year on a daily basis. And in case you noticed, some GMs in the NFL just are not very savvy.
