Sidy Sow - Conflicting Opinions

genius picking an OG that is fine at #1 with a proven track record of getting OL players later in the draft, and a huge need at so many other positions?
I will never support an OG at #1 for any team. a T? yes. QB, WR, CB? yes. a RB (Sony?) no. a TE? maybe
They needed an instant starting OG and drafted one. Yeah... that was a bad pick.

While I agree Strange is hard working and should be a starter his entire contract, it seems the team gets guys like that on day 3 or later over the past decade or so. Thuney. Shaq. Onwenu. Karras. LArsen. Cannon.
If the team is using a #1 at OG, I want a sure fire pro bowl player. a stud. a top 3 in the league through out his contract.
I do not see that in Strange.
Don't get me wrong. if he is Karras, Shaq or Cannon, level, thats great. but not at the #1 draft pick spot.
More than anything a first round pick need to contribute right away. Many people felt Logan Mankins was not a good value when he was drafted. Strange has not hit his ceiling, with his physical tools he has the potential of being one of the best guards in the league. Only time will tell.

I think Mafi is going to be a good one down the road too with the experience he's getting. I didn't like the Strange pick where we took him either knowing we have done well later with those guys. But IF he plays well this year give me some crow stew...can I get some butter with that. :)

You didn’t think Thuney would be a dominating OG as a rookie, give me a break. Strange is every bit the athlete Thuney is.

I think we’ll start

Trent-Onwenu-Andrews-Strange-McDermott

Sow will be the jumbo guy

So pretend they drafted Jack Jones in the first and strange in the 4th, or whatever.

Strange was a guy they knew from coaching him at the Senior Bowl, it was not a shot in the dark. He's amazingly athletic and will have a very good career with us.

Overall you have to be thrilled with what they got for that 21st pick in 2022. They traded it down to 29 in exchange for a 3rd & 4th, then traded the 3rd for a 5th and a 2023 3rd. In all, that pick yielded 3 starters (all with great potential) and a promising backup QB:
- Cole Strange
- Jack Jones
- Bailey Zappe
- Marte Mapu

That's an outstanding haul for that pick. Great drafting.

Yeah, in the face of these facts, it is amazing to me that people here still whine about this pick. If a team can turn ANY #1 pick into that haul, year over year, they have a championship roster in 5 years.

Complaining about BB the GM is pandemic around here.

You said, "The writers can be idiots." I was posting off your comment. Plus, here's been at least two other writers who have left Sow off the 53 (which I disagree with).

I've been positive about the team and draft since last season ended. I am not here to trash the team or players. . Discussions like these are met by personal attacks and misinformation.

I understand why good posters have left the board. Opinions are not appreciated.
The air in an environment such as this is thick with testosterone, so a certain level of posturing and pi----g contests is inevitable. Short of actual cruelty or insult - a thing which also does happen here, alas - it's all just part of the deal, methinks. But it is tedious at times as well, no doubt.

no. I did not think Thuney would be as great as he became.
but he was a day 3 pick, not a day 1 pick, which makes my point.
If STrange was a day 3 pick and an immediate starter, solid OG thru his contract, I am happy as can be. but as a day 1 pick? not really. sorry.

Thuney was not a Day 3 pick. You are a troll. Please go post somewhere else as you can not even keep straight the most simple facts.

I think we’ll start

Trent-Onwenu-Andrews-Strange-McDermott

Sow will be the jumbo guy
LT – Trent Brown, Calvin Anderson (I),
LG – Cole Strange,
C – David Andrews,
Kody Russey, Jake Andrews (Foxboro Flu),
RG – Michael Onwenu, Antonio Mafi
RT – Sidy Sow, Riley Reiff, Connor McDermot (PS),

posting that I would not have picked Strange in that slot is whining? seems like disagreeing with you on an open forum is whining, no?
I would agree, the draft compensation for the deal was nice. I would disagree that Strange was the best pick for the Pats that season.

actually, you are correct. not day 3. 3rd round pick. my bad.
great, another poster that name calls if someone disagrees.

this seems plausible.
my assumption is that Onwenu is not ready. McDermott is the starter at RT.
If Onwenu is ready, I think Reiff is cut

INSIDE (5)
Strange, Andrews, Onwenu, Mafi, Russey
If Onwenu isn't ready, I suspect that Ferentz will make the 53 (or will be signed within a week)
==============================
TACKLES (4)
Brown, Reiff, Sow, McDermott
When and if Anderson is ready, he will replace McDermott or Reiff.
============
DEVELOPMENTAL PLAYER - JAKE ANDREWS (1)
1) There is no such thing as Foxborough flu.
It is a terrible idea for a rookie to be out for a year, rather than practicing with the team for most of the year.
2) Belichick will not cut a 4th rounder.
3) One option is for Andrews to be on the 53, and at some point go on IR for part of the year.
============
BOTTOM LINE
I wanted 5 interior OL's and 4 OT's for a total of 9. With Jake Andrews not ready, I think that 10 is more likely.

McDermott is already behind Sow on the depth chart.
