* Ye Olde 2013 Mock Draft Thread!! *

Rumor is that Alex Smith is being traded for a 4th rounder, no way we get a second for Mallett.

Well looks like that rumor was wrong, 2013 2nd round pick and a mid-round conditional 2014 pick.

Walter Footballs latest draft is horrible in my opinion.

1. Sylvester Williams
2. David Amerson
3. Mike Glennon

Great site for quantity, not so much for quality

Mike Glennon makes no sense. Don't like the Sylvester Williams pick, but could comfortably get behind the Amerson one (for safety).

My early post combine, no trades mock.

The first is my dream mock and the second is based more on what I think the Pats will draft.

These mocks take into account the following FA activity.

1. Re-sign Wes Welker
2. Re-sign Aqib Talib
3. Sign Ed Reed.
4. Sign a pass rusher.
5. Sign a vet mininmum CB and WR.

6. Let Vollmer, Brandon Lloyd, Kyle Arrington and Danny Woodhead leave.

My Preferred mock

1 Markus Wheaton

He's a perfect fit for what the Patriots look for in their WR's. He's been my favourite all along and there's nothing that has changed that. The combine only serves to lock him in as the #1 choice.

2. Terron Armstead.

Outstanding athleticism and lots of room to grow. Unfortunately, I don't see BB using a 2nd round pick on a prospect from Arkansas Pine-Bluff.

3. Leon McFadden.

Unfortunately he didn't wow at the combine and there are probably other CB's that the Patriots will have on their board ahead of McFadden. But for me, he's still the best CB in the draft value wise.

7A Marquess Wilson

A very strong combine in both tests and drills. He has a 7th round personality but a second round skillset. This is a Dennard pick.

7B Brandon Hepburn

A good sized LB from Florida A&M. This guy has The Patriot Way running through his veins.

My Prediction mock

1. Markus Wheaton

Too perfect. I think they should take him in the first if necessary because of the fit. If they could get him in a trade back, then great. The potential release of Brandon Lloyd makes WR as the first pick more and more likely, regardless of what happens with Wes Welker.

2. Jamar Taylor / Logan Ryan / Darius Slay

These three seem like the best fits at present. all can play press, all are physical defenders who can play the run and all performed well at the combine matching up with the Patriot requirements. For now I'd give the edge to Jamar Taylor but I have this feeling about Darius Slay and Logan Ryan's Rutgers credentials obviously will likely endear him to the Pats.

3. Justin Pugh.

Chandler Jones' best friend at Syracuse apparently. They'll have practiced opposite each other so the Patriots will have good insight. He was one of a number of RT/ swing Tackle prospects they spoke with at the combine and for me, the most impressive of the bunch.

7A Marquess Wilson

I didn't like him pre-combine because of his character, but he really impressed me at the combine. Would give us that bigger bodied #1 type to complement Welker's quickness and Wheaton's speed.

7B Jake Knott

One of the best coverage LBers in the draft. The two Iowa Staters, Knott and Klein really stand out for their work ethic and leadership.

Note

If we could pick up an extra 2nd or 3rd round pick either through a Mallett trade or a trade back, Da'Rick Rogers would really interest me. I worry about his character but his measurables were outstanding. A potentially excellent possession receiver.

They had one the other day that was just as bad too, I can't remember the exact players but it was; DT (with Tavon Austin still on the board and going in round 2!) a WR and Tyler Bray.

Early for Wheaton but I don't care. He is a great pick imo. Would prefer a small trade back if possible. If not I'm fine with him at 29. If we traded back and he was selected I'd be bent.

Maybe Buffalo would like to move up from 41 for a late 1st QB...? Could net a third...

Right idea, but I wouldn't be too willing to help Buffalo get their QB. Just about any other team in the late 30s or early 40s, sure.

I don't see it as getting their QB as much as helping them pave their path to futility by over drafting mediocrity...

1. Markus Wheaton,Deandre Hopkins,Keenan Allen.

2. Vance McDonald TE Rice. Athletic, fast, big hands long arms. He is a weapon and also an insurance policy. Let him learn from Gronk and Hernandez and watch the 3 TE set go.

3 DJ Swearinger Fs South Carolina. Doubt he lasts but he's mean and nasty and has played all the secondary positions. other possibilities Tyrann Mathieu, Leon McFadden

7a David Baas. DE MWSU. Sleeper from division 2 who had plenty of production. Could be a steal. May get the Bequette treatment.

7b. Quanterus Smith DE Western Kentucky. Sign him and get him on the ir. Could be a great find as a pass rushing specialist.

For the record, the stated "logic":

The Patriots have used a third-round pick on a troubled but talented SEC quarterback before, so how about a third-round pick on a high-upside but raw ACC product? There's talk that Bill Belichick could trade Ryan Mallett to Michael Lombardi, so if that happens, New England may search for another project at the signal-caller position.

2. Vance McDonald TE Rice. Athletic, fast, big hands long arms. He is a weapon and also an insurance policy. Let him learn from Gronk and Hernandez and watch the 3 TE set go.

Would the Pats really need to spend a 2 on him? Just asking.

For the record, the stated "logic":

That's some logic. He's saying we'll trade away a QB that's spent two years in the system only to draft a new QB that has to learn everything from scratch. He didn't think that one through did he?

Would the Pats really need to spend a 2 on him? Just asking.

Gil Brandt thinks McDonald is the second coming of Gronk for what it's worth. There's a lot to like about him but his hands are a little bit questionable. I prefer Gavin Escobar who has amazing hands. Seems to snag anything within about a 10 foot radius (slight exaggeration). I wouldn't be disappointed spending a second on him.

Excellent mock. I'd prefer Escobar (see above) in the 2nd but could get behind McDonald. Wouldn't have any problem with the other picks.

Why do you like Wheaton so much? I know he's fast but isn't he a bit undersized? Is he your #1 choice just because of his potential fit in our system? He does kind of remind me of Greg Jennings so i wouldn't have too much of an issue with it.

For the record, the stated "logic":

That is very lazy of them! They had almost the exact same reasoning for Tyler Bray previously! Just take out the ACC line and it's the exact same, sloppy to say the least.

I won't speak for Manx, but I love him. I am a pac10 (now 12) alum and I follow the PAC as closely as I can. Wheaton actually came in a bit bigger than expected; I don't think 5'9 and a bit and 180 would have surprised anyone. Remember, wr's often come in a bit on the light side so that they can run. 5'11 and 189 is pretty typical size for an outside wr.

There is a misconception that the Pats prefer 3 cone and the short shuttle to the 40. That is not true at all. They like sub 4.5 guys that kill those drills.

I am not saying that Wheaton will have a career like Welker of Hernandez; however, he seems to have that dynamic hybridity: he is a run threat on plays when he is in motion, you can stick him slot, run bubble screens for him and he will go up and make tough catches when covered. you can move him all over the formation to take advantages of mismatches.

I know highlights are flawed, but I find it impossible to watch clips of him and not see exactly the kind of player they could use.

Impossible to mock right now with BB having about 30m to spend. I'm guessing he re-signs Welker(8m) and Talib(6m we over-rate him but need him). Spends more on the defense. Reed(5m) and Freeney(6m) possibly? About 25m on those four. We could cut Lloyd and trade for Percy Harvin. Would actually be cheaper in 2013. Say we did all of those things. A 2nd for Harvin. Trade Mallett for a 2nd Cleveland will get after trading down from 6.

1. Desmond Trufant - CB - Washington
2. Marcus Wheaton - WR - Oregon St
3. Brian Winters - OL - Kent St
7. Dustin Hopkins - K - FSU
7. Mike Williams - TE - Alabama

Went by CBS rankings. I'd prob also let go; Fells and Gostowski. Signing Thomas and Edelman with that money. Letting the following walk; Arrington, Vollmer and Woodhead. If I have enough left, I'd target Vollmer. Doubt we can afford him though.

Offense
QB - Brady and Kafka
RB - Ridley, Vereen, Bolden and Demps
WR - Welker, Harvin, Wheaton, Edelman and Slater
TE - Gronk, AHern, Ballard and Hooman
OL - Solder, Mankins, Wendell, Connolly and Cannon
Winters, Thomas, McDonald and Zusevics.
DL - C. Jones, Wilfork, Love and Freeney
Ninko, Francis, Cunningham or Bequette, Deaderick and Armstead
LB - Mayo, Spikes, Hightower, Fletcher, Tarp and White/Koutouvides(Maybe UDFA)
CB - Talib, Dennard, Trufant, Cole and Dowling
S - Reed, McCourty, Wilson, Gregory and Ebner.
ST - Metsko, Hopkins and Aiken

I think RB Demps will be an early camp cut. BB won't stand for a 2 sport guy on his team. It's ALL about football.
